Alternator or Dynamo, whats the difference?

Most of the older BX's (pre 2006) came std w/a Dynamo whereas later model BX's (2006 and above) come w/an alternator. Knowing which device you have will determine how much of an electrical load your BX can operate and still maintain a proper charge on the battery.The Dynamo is easily distinguishable from the alternator. it is much smaller and has a solid body without any cooling vents. It is a form of alternator but it is less robust. It is rated to put out approx 14 - 15 amps at full governed engine speed. Like the bigger alternator, it produces an alternating currrent (AC) which is both rectified and regulated by an external voltage regulator mounted under the dash. Since it only developes 15 amps max, there isn't much extra current left to power many add-on electrical accessories. Basically, you can add a single 55 watt work light or two 35 watt work lights and still maintain enough current to properly operate the tractors electrics and recharge the battery. Any more load and you'll end up having to use a battery charger to keep the battery up. The alternator is rated at 40 amps at full governed engine speed and is similar to a std modern automotive alternator but smaller. If you plan on adding many additonal electrical loads to your BX such as 3 or more lights, a flasher, radio or even power a sprayer etc., the alternator should power these additonal loads with power to spare to keep the battery recharged. Just remember to use Ohms Law to deternine the load you plan to add to ensure your charging system wil lhandle it and you should be fine. W = A * V (W=watts, A= current, V= volts) Dynamo, 12v * 15a = 180 Watts max output. Alternator, 12v * 40a = 480 Watts max output. Good luck 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Volfandt, Excellent info. Long time no see!I bought my BX2350 in May 06, how can I really tell if i have the dynamo or alternator? Is there a part number available for the BX alternator, should someone want to swap theirs? Do you find this valuable? |

Vol gave a very good description, yes, he certainly did as he always has.The owners manual for the tractor does not go into that kind of detail. If yours does, would you please cite your machine model and the section/page where it is found? The purpose of my question was two-fold, as it may enlighten others and provide a part number for anyone who may consider the upgrade. Doing additional research I found the following: The alternator part number for a BX1850, BX2350 and BX23 (and possibly others) is 1G825-6401-0. I have heard of owners upgrading to the alternator, usually to run multiple lighting systems, but am not aware if it uses the same mounting brackets. Anyone thinking about this upgrade should check with the parts department at their dealer to be certain. Do you find this valuable? |
